Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Renal Development

Whereas renal failure among adults is usually due to acquired kidney disease, renal insufficiency in children is most often due to primary disorders of kidney development.   Our basic research program focuses on key genes which normally organize nephron formation and branching morphogenesis during fetal life. In particular we are interested in the mechanism by which mutations of PAX2 and BMP genes cause renal hypoplasia and mutations of PKD genes allow excessive cell division in polycystic kidney disease. A long-term objective is to develop strategies which will modify the outcome in these developmental disorders.
